Urbana Casey's

Hello readers. In this post I will be discussing my trip to the Urbana Casey's on 10/24. This will be the easiest of all my journeys because Urbana is the town in which I reside. Below is the route I took.

The weather was splendid. A comfortable 72 degrees F on a Monday afternoon. I opened the garage door and rolled out my bike into the beaming sun. Next, put on a helmet to protect my head in the case of a collision. Below is an image of me wearing my helmet in my garage prior to leaving.

After getting everything ready, I pull out of my driveway and begin my journey. The first thing I notice is that it feels good to be outside. Up to this point I had stayed inside all day working on homework and college applications. I also feel especially free because I usually bike with a backpack and a heavy lock. Today I am much lighter, meaning that I can accelerate faster and maneuver easier. On my trip I observe and absorb the beautiful visual world around me. I only see two other bikers, but a multitude of cars (probably ~100). One of the bikers I see is in oncoming traffic while I am traveling east on main street. I wave to him and he waves back. It's always good to acknowledge fellow bikers. The second biker I saw was far away and not facing me, so we were not able to interact. The whole route was a pretty comfortable ride except for the last short stretch on University. This are frustrates me because there is no good place for bikes to travel. I think that the city should do more to encourage biking.
My effort was medium I would say. After arriving at Casey's I was mildly out of breath and slightly sweaty. Despite google maps making a trip prediction of 17 minutes, my stopwatch said the trip took me 12 minutes and 9.88 seconds. This was faster than I had anticipated. I had gotten lucky with traffic. Additionally, the only stoplight I had to cross was green when I got to it. Below is a picture of me at Casey's.

While at Casey's I did not go inside because I didn't bring a lock and I also didn't have any money. One thing I noticed that disappoints me a little bit is that Casey's doesn't have free pressurized air anymore. In the past, Casey's always had a hose where you could inflate your car tires free of charge. After looking around for a few minutes I decided to head back.

The return trip was pleasant, similar to the initial journey. Unfortunately I had to wait at the stop light this time so my time was 13 minutes and 49.69 seconds. Once I got home, I got myself a cold glass of water, jumped on the couch and reflected on this learning experience.

  1. Yeah I just found out about the no-more-free-air thing myself. Disappointing. Even air has a price now.

  2. You are a very smart man for using protection. Helmets are vital when bicycling!

Next time, consider bringing some money. The pizza there is great! 👍 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕

  3. Interesting idea! However, my suggestion is to take advantage of the warmer days and go to the farther Casey's locations since they will be a lot harder to bike to in cold weather. Also, you should always bring a bike lock.

  4. Sounds like a fun activity! You should buy a flashlight. Hardware stores usually have them and they are very useful especially for camping.
